The Challenge of Cultural Relativism

There are six main ideas about Cultural Relativism. First: different societies have different moral codes. That is true; an average middle age person would agree. Second, there is no standard to base any morals on of any culture. There is no possible way to distinguish what is truly right or wrong; unless you are culturally specific. Third is the moral code of our own society has no special status. Our moral codes are only one set of the entire world. Fourth main idea is there is no “universal truth” in ethics. It definitely makes sense. What is wrong in one society could be frowned upon, or even illegal in another. Fifth, the moral code of a society determines what is right within that society. What is right can only be determined by the society you question. Lastly, it is arrogant to judge or put down people who have different views on morals and ethics. We should adapt and learn to understand the practices of other cultures.

All these ideas about ethics connect with each other. All of them have one simple message; ethics are had to judge within a society at any given time or at any given perspective. This isn’t something to agree or disagree about, it is just the simple fact of life and structure of human existence.
